Why your Shopify store is slow, and how to actually fix it

Introduction

Site speed sits in an awkward place: everyone agrees it matters, few teams know what to do beyond compressing a few images. On Shopify, the platform handles a large share of the infrastructure, which means most slowness comes from decisions made inside the theme and the app stack. Here is where the time actually goes.

1. Know which metrics you are being judged on

Google's Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint), and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift). They are measured from real users in the field, not from a single lab test, which is why your PageSpeed score and your actual field data often disagree. Optimise for the field data in Search Console, and use lab tools only for diagnosis.

2. Apps are usually the biggest offender

Every app that injects a script into your storefront costs something, and the cost compounds. Reviews, upsells, popups, quizzes, wishlists, chat widgets, three analytics tools, and two pixels for the same platform is a stack we see constantly. Audit it honestly: list every app, what it earns or saves, and what it costs in blocking script weight. Most stores can remove several with no measurable revenue impact.

3. Images: the boring fix that still works

Serve modern formats, size images for the container rather than uploading a 3000 pixel hero for a 700 pixel slot, and lazy-load everything below the fold while explicitly not lazy-loading your main product image or hero. Always set width and height so the browser can reserve space; missing dimensions is the most common cause of layout shift.

4. Fonts, sliders, and the hero section

Custom fonts loaded late cause text to flash or hang; preload the one or two weights you actually use and self-host where possible. Carousel heroes are expensive and usually under-performing anyway; a single strong static hero is faster and often converts better. Third-party video embeds in the hero are almost always worth replacing with a poster image that loads the player on interaction.

5. Third-party tags and the checkout

Consolidate tracking. One tag manager, deduplicated pixels, server-side tracking where it makes sense, and a hard rule that no marketing script goes live without someone owning its performance cost. Marketing tags accumulate quietly because nobody is responsible for removing them.

6. Judge the change by revenue, not by score

Chasing a perfect score is a trap; you can score well and still feel slow, and the reverse. Watch mobile conversion rate, bounce on entry pages, and field Core Web Vitals over several weeks. Speed work is worth doing because it improves the shopping experience and gives you a small ranking edge, not because a number turns green.

A practical order of work

Audit and remove apps. Fix the hero and product images. Preload fonts and set explicit dimensions. Defer non-critical scripts. Consolidate tags. Re-measure with field data after two to four weeks. That sequence delivers most of the available improvement before anyone needs to touch complex theme architecture.

Takeaway

Slow Shopify stores are rarely a platform problem. They are an accumulation problem. Remove what you do not need, load what you do need in the right order, and measure the outcome where customers actually feel it.
