Content that sells: what organic social and UGC really do for ecommerce

Introduction

Organic social is the channel founders feel most guilty about. Posting feels obligatory, results feel unmeasurable, and the pressure to be everywhere is constant. But content does specific, valuable jobs for a commerce business, and knowing which jobs they are makes the effort far easier to justify and far easier to scale.

1. Content has three jobs, and they need different measurement

Discovery content reaches people who do not know you, and is judged on reach and new followers. Consideration content answers the questions that stop people buying, and is judged on saves, shares, and site visits. Conversion content, mostly reviews and demonstrations, works on your product pages and in ads, and is judged on conversion rate. Judging all three by likes is why teams conclude social does not work.

2. Your best content is not made by your design team

Polished brand films matter for positioning, but the content that consistently drives sales in consumer categories is closer to how a customer would film it: unboxing, honest first impressions, before and after, how it fits, how it wears, what went wrong and how support fixed it. It is cheaper to produce, easier to produce in volume, and better matched to how people actually decide.

3. UGC is a supply chain, not a campaign

Brands who do this well have a repeatable system: a post-purchase ask at the right moment, clear rights and usage permission, an easy submission route, a small paid creator programme for volume, and a library where the team can find what they need. Treat it as an operation and the flow never dries up. Treat it as a campaign and it stops the moment attention moves.

4. Use content everywhere, not just on the platform it was made for

The same clip should appear on the product page next to the size guide, in a paid ad, in a lifecycle email, and in a support reply. Content is the most under-reused asset in most brands. One good customer video can serve five channels for a year.

5. Pick fewer platforms and be genuinely good at them

Being mediocre on five platforms performs worse than being strong on two. Choose based on where your customers actually make decisions in your category and where your product demonstrates well, then commit to a cadence you can sustain for twelve months rather than a burst you abandon in six weeks.

6. Content and search are now the same conversation

A meaningful share of product research now starts on social platforms and in AI assistants that synthesise from reviews, forums, and video. Being consistently and accurately talked about across those surfaces influences whether you get recommended at all. Content is no longer separate from your organic search strategy; it feeds it.

Takeaway

Stop asking whether social sells and start asking which job each piece of content is doing. Build a repeatable supply of authentic customer content, use every asset in more than one place, and the channel becomes measurable, affordable, and compounding.
